The Octopus Parlour
Maki| August 23, 2008 1:10 pmFriend and former co-worker Lauren King’s new website is up with a undersea menagerie of tasty products. The site includes a gallery, a link to her Etsy page, and a link to this site. Thanks!
I met Lauren in 2004, striking up a conversation upon seeing the octopus tattoo on her back. I, at the time, was still making bronze cast octopi with faucets coming out of their heads and it was like ‘Hey, I like octopi too!’. But I only hit the tip of the iceberg, for it was around that time an underground cult of octopus lovers slowly unfurled before me. Soon I began noticing the signs; an octopus plush toy in the backseat of a van, tentacles curling out from underneath a shirt sleeve, a printout of an octopus ninja. Octopus fans are everywhere.
Smart, dexterous, and fantastical, not many other animals can be so alien yet so widely accepted. Depending on their size and intent, they’re both awe and fear inspiring. Not to mention delicious! Looking back I can’t understand ever not thinking there was a huge octopus fan club out there.
About now you’re thinking ‘Did he say delicious?’ You scoff and challenge my love of these creatures because I like to eat them? Think of it along the same lines as Catholicism. I love you Octopus Jesus.

Hey thanks Maki!
It sure does seem like 4 or 5 years ago, no one was into the octopus. Now, everyplace I turn to there are octopus plushes (“stuffed animals” I’ve been told is un-P.C. – go figure), octopus jewelry, t-shirts, handbags, wallets, you name it. At least we are no longer alone out there in the universe in our love of these 8 legged sea-wandering squishy creatures.
